To mark the United Nations Literacy Decade (2003-2012), the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has launched a funding initiative for research and expert-led development activities in the field of adult literacy/basic education during the period 2008-2012.
This priority funding aims to improve available research on “adult literacy/basic education”. Research results will provide indications as to how participant numbers can be increased through basic education provisions for drop-outs, how existing structures can be improved and how appropriate learning opportunities for and measures to motivate adults can be established.
Collaborative research projects focusing on the funding initiative’s priority areas will link adult learners and actors involved in both academic and practice-based basic education and literacy efforts Germany-wide.
